課程概述

Information technology and systems (IT/IS) have become indispensable components in organizations and, in many cases, greatly facilitate and affect the operations, decisions, strategies, and competitiveness of these organizations. In the digital and knowledge economy, IT/IS plays an increasingly important role. Therefore, the objective of this course is to help students understand the relationships between IT/IS and organizations as well as the management of IT/IS. In addition, this course also provides the opportunities for students to study recent research on some IT/IS applications and emerging issues. 

課程目標
This course is structured into three modules: IT/IS and organizations, management of IT/IS, and IT/IS applications and emerging issues. In the “IT/IS and Organizations” module, we will cover the following topics: 1) IT value and competitive advantage, 2) IT and business process reengineering, 3) digital divide and IT strategy, and 4) business transformation and people. The “Management of IT/IS” module will cover the following topics, including 2) IT governance, 3) IT/IS project management, and 4) IT/IS outsourcing. Finally, the topics discussed in the “IT/IS Applications and Emerging Issues” module include 1) data analytics and intelligence, 2) blockchain & efficiency, 3) Fintech and regulations, 5) electronic commerce, 6) online communities and social networks, and 7) knowledge management.

Term Project:
You are required to undertake a group project related to information systems and management. Each group consists of at most 5 students. Your term project needs to clearly address a research question and provide interesting research results to the target area under investigation. Before your group decides the project direction and scope, you are encouraged to discuss your idea(s) and plan with the instructor(s).

In your project proposal and during the project proposal presentation, you are required to 1) clearly state the motivation and importance of your term project, 2) provide a preliminary literature review, 3) propose your research model (or design) and/or research tasks involved in your term project), and 4) conclude with expected research results. You are expected to prepare a 10-minute project proposal presentation in class and a 5-page written project proposal.

At the end of semester, 15-20 minutes will be allocated to each project presentation. Again, you are expected to report the motivation and objective of your term project, the review of relevant literature, your research model (or design), research results obtained from your term project, and managerial implications and/or academic contributions. In addition, you are required to turn in your final project report (around 20 pages).

On the last day of the semester, each student will be asked to complete a peer evaluation on the contribution of your group members (including yourself). Your evaluation will be kept confidential and will be used as a reference when the instructors assign the individual grade of the term project to each of your group members.

Paper Presentation and Discussions:
The paper presentation is of group effort. Each group consists of at most 5 students. For each assigned article, one group will be assigned to present the paper. The presenting group needs to prepare a 35-minute presentation on the assigned article. The presentation slides should be made available to all other students the day before your presentation. In this semester, each group will be in charge of one paper presentation.

Right after the presentation section of each assigned article is the discussion section. Therefore, besides the presenting group, all other students are expected to finish the reading and participate in the discussions of each paper. When you are reading each paper, you should try to understand the materials covered in the paper. In addition, you should focus on the following issues:
• What are the major contributions of the study?
• What are the shortcomings of the study?
• Can the research model proposed in this study be applied to other domains? If so, whether and how the proposed research model of this study needs to be extended or revised?
• What are the managerial implications of the study?

During the discussion section, the instructors will randomly designate some students for questions. The appropriateness and depth of your answer will be evaluated and counted for your participation of class discussions.

Examination:
There will be one examination, in a format of in-class, open-book and open-note. All class lectures and required readings will be included in the scope for examination questions.

Class Participation:
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in class discussions. In addition to class attendance, the levels of participation will be evaluated on the basis of each student’s contribution to class discussions.
